I’m really rather perplexed by Janice Turner’s discordant presence on the comment pages of The Times. Perhaps the management were informed by an equal opportunities board that they were below the required quota of daft lefties? Whatever the cause for her intellectual pollution of the newspaper, she has followed up her asinine defence of the 50% tax rate with a celebration of the fact that changes to the law mean that it will become more difficult to obtain licencing to open a strip club and that a number of strip clubs in the UK may be shut down in future.
Janice Turner is so insufferably smug and self-confident in her moral superiority that she does not even consider the fact that this might threaten the livelihoods and incomes of hundreds of women at a time of high unemployment and low job creation. Perhaps she believes they will all be able to instantly go and find high-paying jobs writing comment pieces for The Times? Or perhaps this is not important as long as Janice’s principles are writ large?
Janice inhabits a strange moral universe when the freedom to operate, visit or work in a strip club is unacceptable, yet the right to abort a human foetus is sacrosanct. Perhaps God kills a puppy every time someone visits a strip club? I would love to see her reaction if a group of nimbys lobbied the local council to prevent the opening of an abortion clinic in their area. Would she also celebrate this as a moral victory for local activism?
Janice is pretty typical of the confusion that reigns amongst the Guardianistas*: freedom , feminism and The Sexual Revolution are all wonderful, apart from the outcomes that offend their delicate sensibilities.
